kernel-virtua · 7.2.4

A kernel built for the hypervisor

Stable Linux 7.2.4, configured for Debian 13 virtualization hosts (amd64), compatible with about twelve years of Intel and AMD CPUs.

Virtualization

KVM (including AMD SEV), VFIO PCI/GPU passthrough, KSM.

Containers

AppArmor truly active for Docker/LXC, BTF/eBPF (bpftrace, Cilium), IPVS for Swarm and Kubernetes, WireGuard.

Storage

ext4 and Btrfs built in, accelerated compression and checksums. OpenZFS via DKMS.

Reliable reboots

Intel TCO, AMD SP5100, IPMI, ITE, Winbond watchdogs; console on ASPEED and Matrox BMC chips (iDRAC, iLO, Supermicro); EDAC.

Security

Spectre/Meltdown mitigations enabled by default; suspend and hibernate disabled on servers.

Build safeguards

Every requested option is checked at build time: nothing silently disappears between versions.

Install the kernel

The auxinux-virtua package does not install the kernel: add it separately.

  1. 1

    Add the key

    sudo wget -O /usr/share/keyrings/virtua-archive-keyring.gpg \
      https://dep.auxinux.ca/VIRTUA/virtua-archive-keyring.gpg
  2. 2

    Declare the source (production)

    echo 'deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/virtua-archive-keyring.gpg arch=amd64] https://dep.auxinux.ca/VIRTUA kernel main' \
      | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtua-kernel-prod.list

For test hosts only, the kernel-dev suite (7.3 series) is also available.

  3. 3

    Install and verify

    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install kernel-virtua
    sudo reboot
    uname -r # 7.2.4-auxinux-virtua-amd64

The previous kernel remains available in GRUB.

OpenZFS (CDDL license) is distributed as source through DKMS (openzfs-zfs-dkms 2.4.4): no combined GPL/CDDL binary is published. The kernel is GPL-2.0-only.
