Frequently asked questions
What exactly is VirtuaOS?
It is the combination of Debian 13, the kernel-virtua kernel and Virtua, a self-hosted web panel managing KVM/QEMU VMs, LXC containers and Docker, with storage, networking, backups and a datacenter mode (VDM).
Is it comparable to Proxmox?
The scope is similar (KVM VMs + LXC containers on Debian), plus built-in Docker/Compose, networking designed for failover IPs, and a vCenter-like multi-node console (VDM).
Is it free?
Yes. Virtua is MIT-licensed; the kernel is GPL-2.0-only.
What hardware do I need?
An amd64 server with hardware virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) enabled, at least 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk for the system — plus your VMs’ resources. See the requirements.
Are my VMs deleted if I uninstall?
No. Neither apt remove nor apt purge touches guest VMs, LXC or Docker containers.
Is live migration supported?
Migration between nodes through the VDM is offline (shared storage or direct copy).
Is there high availability?
The VDM can run in active/passive HA (Pacemaker/Corosync). For VMs, crash detection allows automatic restart on the same node.
Is ZFS supported?
Yes, through the openzfs-zfs-dkms DKMS package built locally for the VirtuaOS kernel (GPL/CDDL licensing reasons).
Can I use OVH failover IPs?
Yes: VirtuaOS provides bridges with fixed virtual MAC, gratuitous ARP and “cloud-bridged” or routed /32 presets.
How do I update?
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade — data and configuration are kept.
